I come from a long line of Studebakers and Packard owners. And in 1961 when I graduated high school. I got my first Studebaker, a maroon 1955 Champion coupe into which was put a 1957 289 CID engine, and three speed Detroit Gear automatic tranny, and a 4:10 Dana 44 rear end. The engine had a 4bbl WCFB carb, and dual exhaust which was connected to the tranny thru a 6 cylinder torque converter and transmission which effectively changed the stall speed and gear ratios, making the car very very quick. At that time, my Dad had a 1957 Golden Hawk and from 0-80, my little coupe could pull that supercharged engine in his by about three car lengths, which-of course, made for lots of KP and yard duty for yours truly. BUTTTTTTTTT-it sure was fun toasting the 'old man'every week or so. While I had nothing to do with it, I later sold the coupe to a kid in Buffalo, New York who turned the car into a strip only Modified Production Drag car and had very good success at Niagra Raceway in the '60s before the car was totalled in a drag strip accident.

I raced a 1965 Chevy SS in the late '60s, and later built and owned a 1936 Ford Streetrod, but I never forgot my first Studebaker coupe...
